Mid-week Activity: Creative Summer Kickoff

We have to thank everyone that shared their talents and ideas with us tonight.  Here are a few we want to share with you.

Sister Higley shared some fun and inexpensive ideas for teacher gifts.  She bought all of the items at the dollar store.  Isn't the frame cute?  I love how she covered it with crayons.  She also made cute magnet boards using burner covers, paper, mod podge, and ribbon, I would have never thought of doing that!  The magnets were made using the clear rocks with paper on the back.  The last idea used a pack of Rolos, with paper wrapped around it and a Hersey's Kiss glued on the bottom to make a pencil.  Teachers would love these gifts and you wouldn't break the bank telling them thanks for all they do!
Sister Stoker shared some great ideas for Family Home Evening.  She started out by saying that there is no excuse!  We need to make it a priority each Monday night!  What a great time to teach our children of the important truths of the gospel.

Lesson Materials:  Scriptures, Children Scripture Readers, Relief Society Manual, Sunday School Lessons, Gospel Principles, Church History, Church Magazines, Home Evening Manual, LDS.org, A Year of FHE, FHE ideas on Pinterest, LDS Living

Activity Ideas:  Progressive Dinner, Family Restaurant, Manners Meal, Hawaiian Luau, Pioneer Homeade Dinner, Dollar Night, Go on a hike and take a picnic

Game Ideas:  Treasure Hunt, Guess the Hymn, Gospel Charades, Skit on a Gospel Topic
Sister Nesbitt made this poster filled with great thoughts and ideas you could give to the sisters you visit teach.  We will have it hanging up during Relief Society so you can refer to it.  We had time to discuss some commonly asked questions about visitng teaching go here to see some of the answers.  We also encouraged all of the sisters to read Chapter 7 in Daughters in My Kingdom...it is a beautiful chapter on visiting teaching and its purposes.

"Sister Elaine L. Jack, the twelfth Relief Society general president, taught: "In visiting teaching we reach out to each other.  Hands often speak as voices can't.  A warm embrace conveys volumes.  A laugh together unites us.  A moment of sharing refreshes our souls.  We cannot always lift the burden of one who is troubled, but we can lift her so she can bear it well." (pg. 119)

We encourage all of you to get to know each of your sisters so you can be there to celebrate the good times with her and if necessary help her bear the hard times as well.
Sister Williams, Sister Heitz, and Sister Powell shared some fun birthday party ideas.  I'm thinking party planning is in each of their futures :)  Here were some of their suggestions:

-Set a budget
-Decide a Theme- What the birthday person enjoys, Blogs, Pinterest, Google, Ideas site
-Decide Where to have the party:  park, church, your home
-Develop a Timeframe:  how many people will attend, invitations (send out 2-3 weeks ahead), decorations, food, etc...
-Purchase Decorations:  KSL, Dollar, Store, Michaels, Oriental Trading (give yourself enough time), $1 bins at Target
-Plan the Food:  allrecipes.com, Family recipes or traditions, Cakes, Pies, Lunch/Dinner
-Decorate:  Day of or night before, have fun, Try to think of the person you are throwing the party for

Have you been wondering what to do with your kids this summer?  Sister Ashby shared some fun ideas that keep her kids busy and create fun memories.  She has her kids write down summer activity ideas and put them in a jar, or if they are bored they choose an activity from the book above.  Studio 5 had a segment on summer activities go here, to check it out.  They have a chart with 100 summer activities you can do with your kids.  Here are some other resources that Sister Ashby shared with us:

I live in Texas and came across your cute blog about Relief Society activities. I was wondering how your activity of "my favorite things" went about a year ago. we are doing something similar and I would love some insight if you can remember that far back. :) thanks!

Mountain Shadows 4th Ward Relief Society

Hi Mandy....our "My Favorite Things" activity was a lot of fun. We had a great turn out. It was a great way to get to know the sisters in our ward a little better. We learned some good tips for cleaning, found some hidden talents, and all got to go home with a little something new. Everyone wrote their name on a paper when they arrived, the activity leader shared first and then she chose a name and gave them her favorite thing. They went next, etc... Hope that makes sense. It went pretty smoothly. Good Luck! Hope it goes well!
