Sunday Happenings

Today we had a combined lesson with the Priesthood taught by Brother Ashby and Brother Stout of the Bishopbric. They spoke about Self Reliance breaking it down between both Spiritual and Temporal. Brother Stout made the connection that you cannot have one without the other, that Temporal self-reliance is Spiritual self-reliance. They gave us the following pamphlets:

One for the Money
Family Home Storage
Family Finances

Elder Hales has given a wonderful talk on Becoming Provident Providers both Temporally and Spiritually. You can also go to http://www.providentliving.org/ for more information.

Sunday Happenings

Today Sister Smith taught ch. 10: Scriptures. She did a great job getting everyone involved!

Bible: Divided into two sections: the Old Testament and the New Testament. Many prophecies in the Old Testament foretell the coming of a Savior and Redeemer. The New Testament tells of the life of that Savior and Redeemer, who is Jesus Christ. It also tells of the establishing of His Church in that day. “We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly” (Articles of Faith 1:8).

Book of Mormon: “There is a power in the book which will begin to flow into your lives the moment you begin a serious study of the book. You will find greater power to resist temptation. You will find the power to avoid deception. You will find the power to stay on the strait and narrow path. The scriptures are called ‘the words of life,’ and nowhere is that more true than it is of the Book of Mormon. … ‘Every Latter-day Saint should make the study of this book a lifetime pursuit’” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1986, 4–7; or Ensign, Nov. 1986, 5–7; quoting Marion G. Romney, in Conference Report, Apr. 1980, 90; or Ensign, May 1980, 67).
  • When did you first gain a testimony of the Book of Mormon?
Doctrine and Covenants: The Doctrine and Covenants is a collection of modern revelations. In section 1 of the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord reveals that the book is published to the inhabitants of the earth to prepare them for His coming:
“Wherefore the voice of the Lord is unto the ends of the earth, that all that will hear may hear:
“Prepare ye, prepare ye for that which is to come, for the Lord is nigh” (D&C 1:11–12).

Pearl of Great Price: The Pearl of Great Price contains the book of Moses, the book of Abraham, and some inspired writings of Joseph Smith. The book of Moses contains an account of some of the visions and writings of Moses, revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith. It clarifies doctrines and teachings that were lost from the Bible and gives added information concerning the Creation of the earth."
  • What is your favorite scripture?
  • When is the best time for you to read the scriptures? How do you like to study them?

Sister Smith mentioned that "we should read the scriptures because of our need for joy in our lives!" How have the scriptures brought joy into your life?

Sister Spotlight

Our spotlight sister is Kari Winkelkotter. She has grown up in Utah and is the youngest of five half brothers and three half sisters. She keeps busy with a cute, energetic, three year old little boy.
Her favorite colors are: Pink, Black, Blue, and Red, and has too many favorite foods to name. Kari enjoys watching movies and doing Martial Arts. She is also a Martial Arts instructor where she instructs all age groups & choreographs some of the team routines. She loves Karate and is a 3rd degree black belt. Something you may not know about her is she only has one pair of plain white socks all the rest are different....she loves SOCKS! She is also deathly afraid of spiders!
One of her dreams is to go to Australia someday to meet the other half of her family. She has been a Nursery Leader and a Visiting Teacher. We are so happy that Kari is part of our Relief Society.

Sunday Happenings

We would like to welcome Sister Ashby as our new teacher. Sunday, she taught Ch. 9 Prophets of God. She did a great job teaching her first lesson!

Amos 3:7 "Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets."

Why do we need a living prophet today?
  • He knows what we need as a church during this time period
  • As you look at what has been taught in the past....the principles never change....just the vocabulary to fit our needs today
  • Food Storage
  • Family Proclamation (look at what is happening to families in the world today)

"We should do those things the prophets tell us to do. President Wilford Woodruff said that a prophet will never be allowed to lead the Church astray: If I were to attempt that, the Lord would remove me out of my place" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Wilford Woodruff (2004), 199).

What can we do to follow and sustain the prophet?

What have we been asked us to do?

  • Paying Tithing
  • Scriptures
  • Prayers
  • Temple Attendance

Make a mental checklist to see how you are doing.

Can you name all of our prophets?

What was the main emphasis while they were the prophet?

Share this lesson with your family. Here are some fun ideas that you could use for FHE, just click on the title to go to the link:

Sunday Happenings

Sister Winklecotter gave our lesson on gratitude today. She did a great job!

D&C 59:7- "Thou shalt thank the Lord thy God in all things."

How do you remember to show gratitude?
  • Serving others- helps us get perspective on our own problems
  • Sacrament- renew our covenants
  • Remembering the Atonement: reminds us to forgive others as we've been forgiven
  • On the way to work...make a mental list of all the things you're grateful for during the entire drive
  • Prayer- start with the things you're grateful for before you ask Heavenly Father for things
  • Keeping a gratitude journal- each day find 3-5 things you are grateful for
  • Hymns- singing can express gratitude
  • What else do you do to express gratitude?

Elder Hales has said, "Prayer is an essential part of conveying appreciation to our Heavenly Father. He awaits our expressions of gratefulness each morning and night in sincere, simple prayer from our hearts for our many blessings, gifts, and talents."

Scriptures to consider:

  • Mosiah 4:11-12
  • John 14:26
  • Alma 34:38
